Skin
The skin is the human body’s biggest organ, and performs many important functions:

Epidermis
The skin is roughly divided into 3 layers:
- The Epidermis (the outer and top layer)
- The Dermis (the deeper layer)
- The Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Tissues)
The epidermis consists of three different types of cells:
- Keratinocytes
- Melanocytes
- Langerhans cells
Keratinocytes form the bulk of the layer. Viewed through a microscope, they resemble a brick wall.
Melanocytes make the pigment melanin. This chemical is what makes the skin tan. A melanocyte produces the pigment then injects particles of it into the cytoplasm of adjacent keratinocytes. These melanin particles cluster together and absorb the sun’s rays as they pass through the upper layers of the epidermis.
Langerhans cells form about 2-4% of the total cells in the epidermis. These cells are very important for the immune defence system of the body. When foreign materials come into contact with the skin, the tentacles of the Langerhans cells stick to any particles of foreign matter.
Dermis
The dermis is the main part of the skin. It is a tough elastic layer housing important structures: blood vessels, lymph vessels, sensory nerve endings, sweat glands and ducts, hairs and their muscles and sebaceous glands, which produce sebum. There are fewer cells in the dermis than in the epidermis. These cells are surrounded by a tough fibre called collagen. The small blood vessels in the dermis supply the nutritional requirements of the epidermal cells.

Sebaceous Glands
Sebaceous glands produce sebum which ensures both skin and hair are normally kept healthy, shiny and supple. Sebum is a natural emollient (skin softener). It is composed of fatty acids, fatty alcohols and esters (waxes). When combined they produce an oily substance that waterproofs the skin, helps to retain moisture within the skin and imparts a healthy sheen to skin and hair.
Sebum also contains natural salts and lactic acid, helping to maintain the natural and slightly acidic nature (pH of 4.5 to 6) of skin and hair.
